Fruitbox and The Adult Lifestyle Centre

A Proud Collaboration Supporting LGBTQIA+SB Storytelling Through Theatre

The Innovative FruitBox Theatre Team is a non-profit committed to staging and developing original LGBTQIA+SB theatre — delivered something truly special during Pride Month 2023. Their original production, French Letters and Leather Cleaner, was a bold and entertaining performance that celebrated queer identity and visibility with humour, heart, and authenticity.

The stage production was loosely based on an LGBTQ-friendly adult shop and LGBTIQ safe spots, making it the perfect opportunity for a unique and inclusive collaboration.

Adultsmart and Fruitbox: A Creative Collaboration

Adultsmart was thrilled to be invited to collaborate with the FruitBox team for this groundbreaking show. As part of the partnership, FruitBox visited our Adult Lifestyle Centre Kogarah location to capture promotional images and video content that helped shape the visual identity of the show’s marketing campaign.

The visuals highlighted the connection between the themes of the production and real-world inclusive spaces like our Kogarah store — a place built on principles of acceptance, safety, and representation.

How Fruitbox is Making a Difference for the LGBTQIA+SB Community

Theatre has long been a powerful platform for social reflection and change. It allows audiences to step into someone else’s story, challenge preconceptions, and engage in meaningful dialogue. FruitBox embraces this potential by crafting bold, original works that centre LGBTQIA+SB voices and lived experiences.

For years, Fruitbox has used theatre as a tool to promote equality and inclusivity. Each production is an opportunity to break down social barriers and highlight the real challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+SB community. But beyond entertainment, their shows offer education, healing, and visibility.

More Than Just Theatre – It’s About Representation

Representation is essential for LGBTQIA+SB individuals. Seeing your own identity reflected in stories on stage can be empowering — especially for those who’ve long been excluded from mainstream narratives. Representation helps build validation, belonging, and self-expression.

Fruitbox understands this on a deep level. Their shows feature a diverse cast, including many actors who identify as LGBTQIA+SB themselves. By centring queer narratives, Fruitbox ensures that stories from historically marginalised communities are heard — loudly and proudly.

But the importance of representation goes beyond personal identity. It challenges wider audiences to rethink assumptions, broaden perspectives, and engage with the world in more compassionate, inclusive ways.

Creating Inclusive and Safe Spaces for All

Fruitbox is committed to accessibility and inclusion across all aspects of its work. Their performances are intentionally designed to be welcoming to everyone, regardless of gender, sexuality, background, or ability. They offer captioned performances and audio-described sessions to ensure that Deaf and vision-impaired patrons can enjoy their productions without barriers.

Their Ripe Development Program is central to this mission. According to Co-Founder and Artistic Director Sean Landis, the program exists to “facilitate a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+ artists to heal, share and express themselves through storytelling.”

Sean believes that “the arts are an incredible place to promote connection and wellbeing within Sydney’s LGBTQIA+ community as they allow for us to share what we otherwise might not know how to express. Fruit Box Theatre aims to give voice to the unexpressed and allow queer artists to have fun.”

Workshops and Training to Uplift the Community

In addition to performances, Fruitbox offers workshops and training programs specifically designed for LGBTQIA+SB individuals. These sessions provide a space to learn theatre skills, explore personal identity, and connect with others in a safe and empowering environment.

Workshops include everything from performance training and playwriting to social awareness and storytelling. They also serve as a bridge between art and activism, giving participants the tools to express themselves and challenge social norms through creative work.

Accessibility, Affordability, and Community Outreach

Fruitbox is deeply committed to ensuring their productions are accessible to all, including those from low-income backgrounds and communities of colour. They actively work with local organisations to offer discounted tickets and host free performances in public spaces.

This commitment to inclusion, equity, and outreach is what sets Fruitbox apart. They’re not just telling stories — they’re building community, challenging injustice, and uplifting voices that deserve to be heard.

Fruitbox’s Ongoing Impact on the LGBTQIA+SB Community

Theatre as a Catalyst for Awareness, Empathy, and Change

By centering LGBTQIA+SB voices in every aspect of their work, Fruitbox is helping to reshape how queer stories are told — and how they’re received. Their productions are doing more than entertaining crowds; they are challenging harmful narratives, confronting bias, and encouraging dialogue around the lived experiences of queer people in Australia.

Through storytelling, Fruitbox tackles difficult topics like discrimination, homophobia, and transphobia head-on. Audiences are invited to reflect on their own assumptions and engage in conversations that lead to deeper understanding and acceptance. This impact goes far beyond the stage — it reaches into homes, schools, workplaces, and communities, fostering empathy in every space it touches.

What’s Next for Fruitbox?

Expanding Reach, Deepening Community Connections

Fruitbox has no plans to slow down. With a clear vision for the future, the team is set to expand their productions and workshops, reaching even broader audiences and creating more inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+SB individuals to thrive creatively.

They’re also partnering with more community organisations to make their work accessible to those who may not otherwise be able to afford it. Discounted ticket programs and free public performances will continue to be a core part of their outreach model, ensuring that access to the arts remains equitable and empowering for all.

Using Art to Advocate and Amplify

Beyond Theatre — A Platform for Activism

Fruitbox is also taking their mission further by partnering with advocacy organisations to actively support LGBTQIA+SB rights. By combining art and activism, they’re using their platform to amplify the voices of marginalised communities and highlight the urgent issues that still affect queer lives today.

Their work isn’t just about representation on stage — it’s about driving real change off-stage. Whether it’s supporting gender-diverse youth, advocating for safer spaces, or promoting inclusive policies, Fruitbox is committed to being a voice for progress within and beyond the LGBTQIA+SB community.

Respect to Elders and Country

Acknowledging First Nations Custodians

Fruit Box Theatre acknowledges the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia and recognises their ongoing connection to land, water, and culture. We pay deep respect to Elders past and present, whose resilience and wisdom continue to guide communities and creative expression.

Fruit Box operates primarily on the stolen lands of the Gadigal and Wangal peoples of the Eora Nation. We honour their legacy and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded.

The Role of Art in Driving Social Change

Using Theatre to Inspire, Challenge, and Transform

Art has always held the power to reflect society, provoke thought, and inspire change. It allows us to imagine a different world — one rooted in equality, inclusion, and justice. Through creative storytelling, communities are empowered to confront difficult issues and rethink the systems around them.

Fruitbox Theatre embodies this spirit. They are a living example of how art can break down social barriers and help build a more equitable society. Through powerful productions and inclusive workshops, they use theatre as a platform to elevate LGBTQIA+SB voices, challenge stereotypes, and encourage compassion.

Their work fosters empathy, representation, and connection, inviting audiences to engage with the world through a more inclusive lens.

Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces

A Platform for Growth, Healing, and Visibility

Fruitbox isn’t just a theatre company — they are a catalyst for progress. By providing spaces that are welcoming, accessible, and affirming, they support LGBTQIA+SB individuals in feeling seen, heard, and valued.

Whether it’s on stage, in a workshop, or during a community event, their commitment to inclusion is unwavering. Their projects encourage dialogue, self-expression, and collective growth — all vital components of a fairer, more compassionate society.

By supporting Fruitbox, we are not only backing meaningful art, but also contributing to a broader movement towards equality and representation.

Adultsmart Is Proud to Support Fruitbox

A Minor Contribution with Major Heart

At Adultsmart and the Adult Lifestyle Centre Kogarah, we were honoured to play a small role in Fruitbox’s important work. Being able to offer our premises for the filming of promotional content for French Letters and Leather Cleaner was a privilege.

We’re proud to have contributed in a way that aligned with our own values of inclusivity, expression, and support for diverse communities. Fruitbox’s creativity, passion, and commitment inspire us — and we look forward to seeing where their next production takes them.
