Mental Health and Sex

Americans have long-term Health and Sex issues. Shall we talk about them together? It’s a one-two punch of stigma. But ever so slowly we grow – and open up. And that’s good. Because the connection between the two is deep.

We know the amazing things sex can do for your mood and mind, from the release of endorphins and oxytocin to the emotional closeness you experience with your partner. The sex and body positivity (or bo-po) movement, greater acceptance of LGBTQ and gender identity, and the growing sexual wellness industry are also bringing a new approach to sex and mental health.

Talking about sexual health is comforting, helps normalize the conversation, adds new stories and reduces stigma. All of this improves overall mental health.

Health and Sex

But there are still roadblocks, especially if—and when—anxiety, OCD, bipolar, or another mental illness decides to crash the bedroom. A large pre-pandemic study of thousands of men and women between the ages of 18 and released in June 2020 in JAMA (The Journal of the American Medical Association) found compelling evidence that sexual activity is lower today than in previous generations.

Authors of the study hypothesize that decreased sexual activity may be associated with increased depression and anxiety. But there’s something else that can compete for our attention—our screen. (Gawking is coined to describe the fact that the person you’re with is looking at your phone in favor you).   It’s clear that sexual health and mental health can influence and even perpetuate each other.

How or why is less clear. Let’s take a closer look at how the most common mental disorders can affect your sex life – and how to take control.

Anxiety and Sex

How Are They Related Ever Heard of Arousal Mismatch?

It’s when the body and mind get out of sync during sex—the body wakes up but mind isn’t, or vice versa—and that happens a lot with women and men with anxiety. Anxiety is one of the main causes of erectile dysfunction (or ED) in men.   Relationships and Sexual Health in Royal Oak, Michigan say,  “We see a lot of younger men in their 20s and 30s who get ED.” Research has shown that anxiety—especially early in a man’s sexual life, when self-consciousness and performance stress are important issues—may be the biggest and most common cause of ED in young men.

Not taking action makes them even more anxious, which then leads to erectile dysfunction.  But it’s not really erectile dysfunction, it’s anxiety that interferes with erectile concentration. Women who struggle with anxiety also experience sexual dysfunction: they may have difficulty waking up or achieving orgasm, or during intercourse physical pain.

From a physiological perspective, anxiety can override pleasure in anxious women. In fact, many researches shows that the most common type of sexual pain – genital penetrating pain disorder (or PVD) – occurs more often in women with a previous diagnosis of anxiety disorder.  In fact up to 10 times more.
OCD and Sex

How They Are Related?

It is not uncommon for people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or chronic anxiety disorder, to report being bombarded with sexual obsessions or unwanted sexual thoughts (although this has proven difficult to know for sure. if these sexual thoughts are more frequent than other unwanted thoughts in clinical trials).

Some sexual thoughts lead to the conclusion that OCD patients have an obsessive fear of being or becoming LGBTQ; preoccupied with inappropriate sexual desires (such as attraction to children, family members, religious figures or even animals) and inappropriate images. In addition to these unwanted thoughts, OCD sufferers tend to experience a number of sexual disturbances, including problems with arousal and low sexual desire.

Both can be associated with other OCD-related thoughts, such as fear of sex or disgust with sexual activity – which are particularly common in contamination obsessions.

ADHD and Sex

How They Are Related?Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that can cause impulsive behavior, hyperactivity, and inattention. Two of the more commonly reported and increasingly studied sexual symptoms of ADHD are hypersexuality (abnormally high sexual desire) and hyposexuality (absence of sexual desire). Although neither is recognized as a diagnostic criterion for ADHD.We know that with ADHD, when a person is interested in something that they spend most of their time on and focus on.

Sometimes it’s like that with sex and porn. From a mental health perspective, it can sometimes feel like an addiction in its own right. Indeed, research has shown that hypersexuality and ADHD are common co-occurring conditions, and that ADHD can make worse the severity of hypersexuality in men and women. Even if a person with ADHD is not that interested in sex, they may not have the desire, focus or energy for sexual activity. Both gender symptoms can cause problems in intimate relationships.
